The port city of Kristiansand is located on the South Coast – the Skagerrak coast – and is the administrative center of Vest-Agder county. Kristiansand has 81,300 inhabitants (2010), and is the 5th largest city.
The city is a major transportation hub for southern Norway, with excellent rail, air, bus and ferry connections to home and abroad.
Kristiansand is known for his popular wildlife and recreational park, located just outside the city. The site has over 600,000 visitors annually, and opens also a new outdoor / indoor water park in June 2010.
The city has a rich cultural life with museums, art galleries, concert halls, theaters and several annual festivals. In 2012, the “source” – a new concert and theater – will be ready.
Kristiansand attracts many tourists during the summer, and there are great beaches along the coast and a beautiful coastline. Fish Wharf in the center is also a popular meeting place in summer, with restaurants / nightlife and a thriving boating.
Some of the most visited sites are Christian Fortress from 1672, Kristiansand Cathedral from 1885 in Gothic Revival style, Oddernes church from 1045 (one of the oldest), Southern Norway Art Museum, Vest-Agder-museum (which has several branches in different locations in the city – eg nature museum, botanical garden and outdoor museum – both old buildings and exhibition of Kristiansand in miniature) – as well as museum railroad “Setesdalsbanen” (in Vennesla, just north of the city),
