Sogndal is a village and a municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county on the west coast. The village – which has approx. 3100 inhabitants – lies deep in the fjord.
The Sognefjord is Norway’s longest and deepest fjords, and a popular destination on the West Coast.In the area around the fjord is beautiful scenery, and best known is NOK Jotunheimen glacier Glacier National Park.

Sogndal has a rich cultural history, and has several points of interest – including Kaupanger stave church from 1140 (one of Norway’s oldest stave churches) – and The Heiberg Collections (Sogn Folk Museum) in the town, which is 7 km from Sogndal.
Here you will find two sections: one is open air museum – with buildings from the Middle Ages to the 1980s, farm, and the main building with an exhibition of artifacts related to agriculture, handicrafts, textiles etc.
The second is the Sogn Fjord Museum is located at Kaupanger ferry dock – 5 min. drive from the main museum building. Fjord Museum has a local historical collection of boats, fishing gear etc.
Norwegian Glacier Museum, located in Fjærland in Sogndal municipality, are also worth a visit. The museum has exhibits and models of glaciers, and the movie theater showing the film on the glacier.
