Stord is a municipality in Hordaland county on the west coast, which lies on the southern half of the island of Stord in Norway .Stord is located halfway between Stavanger and Bergen , in the region Sunnhordaland, and is an important trade center for the area.There is a gangway from the island to the mainland.

Stord received city status in 1997, and the community center – which has 11,400 inhabitants (2009) – called Leirvik.

The village has more shops and malls, restaurants and nightlife, from Leirvik has a short distance to the sea and mountains, cultural attractions and outdoor activities. From the harbor in Leirvik has ferry connections to many other places on the West Coast.

Stord has several tourist attractions and sights – including Stord church from 1857, the 16-meter high “Storddøra” (which is a sculpture on the pier in Leirvik), Mining Museum Litlabø, Gallery Giga (an art gallery with an exhibition of important Norwegian artists), and Sunnhordaland Museum is located on Sunnhordaland museum and has 11 old buildings from 1500 – and 1600’s. The oldest building is “Adlandstova” from the 1400s.

On the island Halsnøy is Halsnøy monastery from 1164 – built by vikinghøvingen Erling. The ruins of the monastery is now a museum, and one can take the ferry from Leirvik to the island. The journey takes approx. 1 hour.

Otherwise, Stord swimming pool slides, diving tower and pool for children – and is an attraction for the whole family.
