Tonsberg is a city located in Vestfold county, and in the east, the coastal line of the Oslo Fjord. The city itself has about Tønsberg. 40,000 inhabitants (2010), and is Vestfold’s administrative center and main commercial city.
Tønsberg was founded in the year 871 and is Norway’s oldest city. It has several historic tourist attractions – including Castle Rock, which is the largest ruin park. It is also Slottsfjell tower built of stone from 1888, the city’s landmark. In addition, there are ruins of medieval castle Tunsberghus, which was the largest fortress in the 1200s.
At the foot of Castle Rock is Slottsfjell Museum, which presents Vestfold’s history with an emphasis on maritime and whaling.
Other attractions include TønsbergTønsberg Cathedral from 1858, Sem church from the 1100s, Haugar Art Museum (with an exhibition of contemporary Norwegian art) – and the modern library, which was Norwegian Steel construction price in 1993 – and which is built over the ruins of the old St. Olav’s Monastery from the 1100s.These are visible in the library basement.
Tonsberg is a popular holiday resort in summer, and has a beautiful coastline, excellent beaches, marina and varied nightlife. In the center is also “Farmandstredet” – one of the largest shopping malls with 126 stores.
The nearest airport is Sandefjord Airport – Torp , located 25 km southwest of Tønsberg.
