Fort Myers is located southwest of the State of Florida, by the river Chaloosahatchee which flows into the Gulf of Mexico. The town has 68,700 inhabitants (2008), and was founded in 1850 as a military fort – and is the oldest city in the county of Lee County.
Fort Myers is known as the “City of Palms” (“Palm City”) – because the 1800 palm trees found along McGregor Boulevard. The city has many historic and cultural attractions and good shopping in both stores and shopping centers.
Many tourists come to town to swim in the inviting and miles of sandy beach Fort Myers Beach. It is also great golfing opportunities in the area and the city has a vibrant nightlife with pubs, casinos and night clubs.

“Edison & Ford Winter Estate” is one of the most visited attractions. Fort Myers was more than 50 years the winter residence of Thomas Edison and his friend, Henry Ford lived here too often. House of Edison is now a museum exhibition of his many inventions, a laboratory and a botanical garden. The city also has an annual lysfestival in February, in honor of Thomas Edison.
