Memphis is the largest city in the state of Tennessee, located on the Mississippi River in the county of Shelby County. The city has 680,000 inhabitants (2008), and is an important commercial and industrial center and rail hub.
Memphis is known for Graceland, the Elvis Presley’s home. Elvis lived here until his death in 1977. Graceland is a major tourist attraction, and has 600,000 visitors annually. Graceland was built up as a museum, an exhibition of Elvis’ personal items, costumes, vehicles, etc. In association with Graceland’s property “Heartbreak Hotel” as well as souvenir shops and restaurants.
Memphis is also known as the hometown of the blues, and the city’s entertainment quarter Beale Street – with restaurants, bars and blues concerts.
