Alajuela is a city with a central location in Costa Rica in Central America. The city belongs to the province of the same name, where it also is the capital. The province is located in the Valle Central, at 1,000 meters above sea level. It is only 20 km from the capital San José located slightly further south, and Alajuela is the second largest city in area. In 2007, the population of just under 50,000 within the city limits.

In the rich area, there are many parks and the most popular here is the Parque Central in the heart of the city. The surrounding area is the zoo Ave and a butterfly farm. One of the main attractions is the active volcano Poas which last erupted in 2009 and is surrounded by breathtaking scenery. In April, carnivals and parades in the streets when it is celebrated Juan Santamaria Day, and in July held Mango Festival with various stalls and parades.

Juan Santamaría International Airport is the main airport in the country and is located 3 km outside the city center.
