Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJA) is located in Alajuela about 20 km from San Jose and is named after Costa Rica’s national hero Juan Santamaria. There is a bus every 5 minutes between the airport and San Jose. The car rental companies that offer their service is Alam, newspaper, Avanti, Budget, Europcar, Mapache, Payless, Thrifty, Toyota and Tricolor.

3.2 million passengers visited the San Jose Airport in 2008, which is the largest in Costa Rica. When traveling from the airport you must pay a fee of 26 U.S. dollars. The fee can be paid at the airport or in advance by credit card from most hotels. From San Jose can travel directly to international destinations in Europe, North and South America. San Jose Airport offers simple meals and café as well as duty free and some souvenir shops. It also has an ATM. There are no hotels at the airport.
