Kajaani lies in Kainuu, rather in the middle of Finland (midway between the two large lakes Oulujärvi and Nuasjärvi).The town has approx. 38,000 inhabitants (2007), and was founded in 1651 around the fortress Kajaneborg (1604) – which is still Kaja Anis’s most famous attraction.
Kajaani is a very active cultural and Convention city. Right Alva Kaajaninjoki – near downtown – there is great Kaukametsä convention and cultural center, where many major business and cultural events take place.
Otherwise, Kajaani particularly known for its annual national dance festival – Kajaani tansii, and as home to one of Finland’s leading theaters – Kajaanin Kaupungin Teatteri. Another popular event is the annual poetry festival in early July each year (Finland’s largest).
One of Finland’s most popular ski resorts – Vuokatti – is about. 35 km southwest of Kajaani. There is also a 1250 m long ski tunnel, where it is possible to ski all year round.
Airport Kajaani Airport is about. 7 km northwest of downtown.From there, daily flights to the capital Helsinki.
