Dortmund is the Ruhr area in western part of Germany, and belongs to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.The city has about 600,000 inhabitants and is known as the “green city” because of its many forests, rivers, farmland and parks.
Dortmund, Europe’s largest canal port, located at the Dortmund-Ems Canal – and connects the Ruhr area with the North Sea.
The city was heavily destroyed during the 2nd World War II, and therefore has few historic buildings. However, some sites have been rebuilt, including St. Reinoldi Church and St. Mary’s Church – both from the 1200s.
Other sights in Dortmund is: The old port with the building from 1898 with its 38 meter high tower, “Museum am Ostwall” – exhibition of modern art with paintings, sculptures and photographs, theater building “Opernhaus” from 1958 and the Natural History Museum – founded in 1912. The city also has botanical and zoological gardens.
Dortmund is also known for its annual Christmas market, which is one of Germany’s largest.
