Dresden lies on both sides of the river Elbe in the eastern part of Germany – and is the main town in the state of Saxony.The city has 505,000 inhabitants (2008) and is an important road and rail hub. The distance to the Czech border is just 47 km.

Dresden is an important center for science and research, and is also internationally recognized as art, theater, and music city.

On the south side of the river is the Altstadt – Old Town, where most tourist attractions are located. The famous park Grosser Garten from the 1600s is a major tourist attraction and contains botanical and zoological garden, open-air stage, miniature railway and lake. There are also ruins of the palace garden from 1678 and a mosaic fountain.

On the north side of the river is Neustadt – New Town, the city’s business district.

Zwinger Palace is a popular attraction in Dresden. The castle originally dates from the 1700s, and has   pavilions, galleries, museums and art collections.Other tourist attractions in the city: Opera building from 1878, desde Castle from the 1700s, the Cathedral “Katolische Hofkirche” from the 1700s and the Frauenkirche with its huge golden dome – originally from the 1700s, but was destroyed during the 2nd World War II and rebuilt in the period 1993 – 2006.

The city’s international airport – Dresden Airport – located 10 miles north of downtown.
