Freising is located in southeastern Germany on the River Isar, and is part of the state of Bavaria.The town has 45,600 inhabitants (2008), and is only 32 km north of Munich .
Freising is a historic center of the Middle Ages, where the Marienplatz square is located. Mariensäule from 1674 is one of the attractions of Marienplatz – high monument of the Virgin Mary, made ??of red marble.This square is also popular to visit for its friendly markets.
Freising is famous for the two hills that dominate the landscape – Weihenstephaner and Domberg (“Cathedral Hill”).
In the western outskirts of the city is a former monastery complex – Weihenstephaner – which houses one of the oldest breweries (from 1040). Visitors can get a guided tour of the brewery, and it also has a nice restaurant.
Domberg – or Cathedral Hill – has several historic tourist attractions.Here is the Cathedral (also known as St. Maria und St. Korbinian Cathedral) from the 1160’s, which was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1723.There is also Dombergmuseet here – one of the largest church museums in the world – with paintings, sculptures, medals, clothing, etc.
