Hamburg is located in northern Germany , and is the country’s second largest city with 1.7 million inhabitants (2007).The city is situated where the rivers Alster and Bille flows into the Elbe – 110 km from the North Sea. Hamburg is a cultural and economic center of Northern Germany, and also has one of the largest ports in the world.

One of Hamburg’s most visited tourist attractions include St. Michael’s Church from 1647 – with its 132 meters high tower. The church tower is open to the public, and from the top has great views of the harbor.

Also Johannes Brahms Museum, which tells of the famous composer’s life and work, is worth a visit.

Other tourist attractions in town include Rathaus (Town Hall) from the 1890s, St. Jakobi church from 1340 in Baroque style, the St. Petri Church from 1000-century Customs Museum, Hamburger Kunsthalle (with exhibitions of art from the Middle Ages to the present day), Speicherstadt Museum St. Catherine’s Church in Gothic style from the 1200s – and the art gallery “Deichtorhallen”, which basically shows international contemporary art and photography.

In Hamburg has excellent shopping opportunities – especially in the city’s shopping street “Jungfernstieg”, featuring both department stores and fashionable boutiques.

Otherwise, the city is known for street Reeperbahn (also called “Der Kiez”) – with its many bars, night clubs and brothels.
