Stade is situated in the northern German state of Lower Saxony – approx. 50 km west of Hamburg – and has approx.46,000 inhabitants (2008). River Schwing, which is a tributary of the Elbe, flows through the city. Stade is known since the 800’s and possibly North Germany’s oldest city.It acquired city rights in 1209 – and was at that time a member of the influential Hanseatic League. In the first part of the 1600s the city was alternately in Danish and Swedish hands – and in the period 1645-1719 was still a Swedish city.
Among the architectural gems in the old town center (Altstadt), we find the two medieval churches (with later extensions) St. Cosmae and St. Wilhedi.
