We rented a car at Franfurt Airport through Europcar. The process of getting the car was quick and easy. The price was much lower than booking directly through Europcar.

Car rental Kos

Located in the Dodecanese Islands, Kos is one of those serene islands that really help to put Greece on the map when it comes to leafing through your travel brochure. It is well known for its sandy beaches and delightful shopping scene, where you can explore the endless markets in which natives display their clever crafts. With plenty of surrounding towns to see, as well as a fascinating history to discover, Kos is sure to offer you and your family a special holiday you’ll remember forever.

If you’re after a relaxing holiday with the freedom to do what you want, when you want you’ve definitely come to the right place. Greece has forever been a popular choice for holidaymakers, and Kos really helps the country to maintain that claim. The beautiful Greek island of Kos boasts vitality and variety, making it the perfect holiday destination for all the family. From bars to beaches, cultural shopping scenes and history, Kos has got everything you ould ever want from a European getaway.

Kos is one of the most popular destinations for a summer getaway, offering a landscape that is perfectly picturesque. Over 1 million visitors are welcomed onto the island every year and are responsible for around 60% of the economy. This figure makes it the third most populous island in the Dodecanese area. If it’s a party you’re after, there ain’t no party like a Kos club party! There are two famous streets which really put the life into nightlife.

If you’re a history buff, be sure to check out the Neratzia Castle. Dating back to the 14th century, the magnificent structure dominates the island, standing proudly for all to see. It was erected in 1315 by the Order of St John and is easily the best preserved castle on the island. If you’d like a day off from your usual holiday routine of swimming and sunbathing, this is the perfect place for quirky holiday snaps. Perhaps somewhere you’d like to visit in your hire car…

Explore with your rental car

While Kos is brilliant for versatility when it comes to finding things to do, it is highly recommended that you get yourself a hire car. With plenty of car rental companies to choose from, offering reasonable rates, a car is an investment worth making when visiting the island. It will give you the freedom to zip about wherever, and with several attractions easy to reach by car. The castle mentioned above, for example, is reachable from Kos Old Town in less than five minutes by car.

Maybe the Old Town is more your style, especially if you’re in the mood for a shopping spree. Even if you happen to be staying in the nearby mountain village of Zia, reaching our cultural shopping scene will take you 15 minutes in the car. If handcrafted markets and native sellers are your things, they are only 7 miles (12 km) away from the lovely village of Zia. The island is your oyster when you hire a car.

If the nightlife is your thing, maybe you’re best off not driving. But what you can do with a hire car is assign a willing designated driver from your party and have them come pick you up. With the two main party streets of Kos within around ten minutes driving distance – or less – we’re sure they won’t mind coming to pick you up in the family rental car after you’ve partied the night away. Just as long as you return the favour the next day, of course!

Airports

The nearest airport to the island of Kos is Kos International Airport. At 23 km (14 miles) away from Kos, you’ll only be driving for around 20 minutes. Perfect when you’ve landed, waited for your luggage and all you want to do is relax! This also makes for a relaxing return journey, and ultimately maximises your time on the island. Fabulous!

Hiring a car from Kos Internation Aiport couldn’t be easier. Both Kos Car Hire and Thrifty Car Rental are based in the airport, offering various model options and rates. At companies such as Thrifty (one of Greek’s largest) and the international car rental service Aviva (which has a branch in Kos), it is possible to book online in advance and sometimes receive special discounts as a result. Wherever you go, you won’t be stuck for a car in Kos.

Some other Kos-based car rental options include the internationally renowned Herz Rent a Car company, as well as the Autoway Rent a Car, which although a little out of the way as it is based in Kefalou, Κως, may offer better rates. However, whether it’s convenience or cost-effectiveness, you’re sure to find both within easy reach.

Traffic

In 2019, Kos International Airport reported traffic figures of 2,676,644. Out of the main town of Kos, however, roads are generally quiet. There is one main road through the middle of the island which can get a little busy, but a hire car still makes for a sensible choice.

It is advisable to note that driving takes place on the right-hand side of the road and seatbelts are a legal requirement for all passengers. Parking often takes place down the sides of streets and many of the streets in the town follow a one-way system. It is forbidden to park in the centre of town. Perhaps most importantly, remember that the speed limit is generally 50 km/h in residential areas (30 mph) and up to 120 km/h (75 mph) on highways unless otherwise stated. Happy driving!
