Vila do Conde is a coastal town located 27 km north of Porto at the mouth of the River Ave.26,000 lives in a city that is located in the Douro Litoral region. With parishes Azurara and Arvore going population in 32,000.

Vilao do Conde was founded in 1318 and rebuilt in 1778. In the convent of Santa Clara are the tombs of city founders, Dom Afonso Sanches, son of King Dinis, and his wife Dona Teresa Martins. Monastery fountain had water from a five kilometer long avedukt which was built in the 1800s. Much is left today, and there are also several old churches and a lovely Gothic doorway. The city is the center for lace production. The city had its heyday in the 15-1600s when it was the country’s shipbuilding center. The city has several fine beaches and a lively nightlife in the neighboring town of Povoa de Varzim.
