Kimberley is the capital of the province of Northern Cape and has approx. 220,000 inhabitants (2008). The city was founded in 1866, and five years later, two large diamonds found in the area. This meant that the site was attractive to the mining industry.
Kimberleys biggest tourist attraction is “The Big Hole” – a large hole in the ground after the removal of 3 tons of diamonds. “The Big Hole” is described as the world’s largest hand-dug hole.
In Kimberley the center are a number of beautiful Victorian houses and art galleries, statues, monuments and museums. The Natural History “McGregor Museum” is well worth a visit, with exhibitions in zoology, botany, history, archeology and anthropology.
The nearest airport is Kimberley Airport, located 6 km south of downtown. The airport has direct flights to both Cape Town and Johannesburg.
