Pietermaritzburg is located in the southeastern part of South Africa, and is the capital of the province of KwaZulu-Natal.The town has approx. 600,000 inhabitants (2010), and is often referred to simply as “Maritzburg” or “PMB”.

The city is surrounded by wooded hills and rolling countryside, in the city’s lush vegetation in parks and gardens. A popular tourist attraction in Pietermaritzburg is the botanical garden.

Other city sights include Museum Tatham Art Gallery – with oil paintings, skulptuer and beadwork. The site also has an impressive collection of British and French artists from 1800 – and 1900’s. The most famous is Degas, Picasso, Matisse and Renoir.
