Mariestad (15,500 inhabitants in 2005) located in the southwestern part of Sweden, and is part of Västra Götaland.The city is located on Sweden’s largest lake, Vänern, and is known for its beautiful archipelago with many islands and islets.In summer there is a great boat traffic on Lake Vänern, and lovely beaches.
Mariestad was founded in 1583, and in Gamla Stan is one of the best-preserved city centers – with beautiful wooden houses and the cathedral from 1593.
Central to Mariestad is Valbo Museum, which is one of the city’s tourist attractions. The museum exhibit where visitors can learn about the district and the city’s history, from the Stone Age and until the 1900s.The building is also Museum.
