Samsun is centrally located on the north coast of Turkey, bordering the Black Sea.The city is the capital of the province of Samsun and is located about 400 km from the capital Ankara in the west. The port of Samsun is the main port along the Black Sea coast and exported textiles and tobacco. Number of inhabitants in the city was estimated at almost 400 000 in 2008. The city was founded with the name Amisus in the 6th century BC
The city was almost completely destroyed in the 1400s, so even if Samsun is an old city, there are few historic buildings left. One of those still standing, is Pazar mosque is the oldest buildings in town and was built in the 1200s. If you are interested in the history visitors can head to the Archaeological Museum. Another museum worth a visit is the Ataturk Museum which is dedicated to the Turkish republic’s founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
Samsun-Carsamba Airport offers both domestic and international flights and is approx. 23 km outside the city.
