Joensuu miniguide
Joensuu, which has approx. 72,000 inhabitants (2009), is an inland County in Eastern Finland, which is part of the landscape Pohjois-Karjala (Northern Karelia). The distance east to the border with Russia is about 70 km.The city was founded in 1848, where the river empties into the Pielisjoki Pielisjärvi, which is part of Finland’s largest lake system – Saimaa (Swedish: Saimaa).
Joensuu is thus a relatively young city, which architecture is characterized by. Thus, there are few historical sites in town. Joensuu is a popular starting point for trips to the old, orthodox munkeklostrene Uusi-Valano and Lintula (about 60 km further west) – and for exploring the beautiful natural areas in this part of Karelia.
There are several major shopping centers in and around Joensuu. Otherwise, the city has invested a lot of art and culture – and the two art museums Ahio (Finnish and North-Karelian Art) and Joensuu Art Museum (Finnish, Chinese, Greek and Roman art – as well as Orthodox icons) are well worth a visit.
Airport Joensuu Airport has daily flights to the capital Helsinki.
