Chios (Chios, Hios) located in the Aegean Sea – 7 miles from the coast of Turkey – and the 5th largest island in Greece .The island has 54,000 inhabitants (2006), and is known for its beautiful scenery and good climate. Chios is also little affected tourism, and many smaller cities with authentic Greek atmosphere.
Chios was conquered by the Turks in 1556, and the island was under their rule until 1912 when it became part of the Greek state.
The highest mountain is Pelineon Oros, located 1297 meters above sea level
The capital of Chios town – or Chora – located on the island’s east coast, has about 30,000 inhabitants.The city has the island’s main port, and the sights here is a beautiful medieval castle, an archeological museum and a Byzantine museum. In the center are parks and squares, as well as main street “Aplotarias” 15 km from Chios town is the monastery Nea Moni from 1000-century, listed on UNESCO World Heritage List and is a major tourist attraction.Another attraction on the island is the village Pirgy – located in the south and is called the “colorful community” because the houses are decorated in black and white. The Mesta – located southwest of the island, has many unique buildings from the 1200s – is a popular destination. Also, Karfas Beach, which is the finest of Chios, mentioned. It is located just south of the capital.
