Norrköping miniguide
Norrköping, which has approx. 85,000 inhabitants, situated in Östergötland County – 160 miles southwest of Stockholm .The city lies at the head of the fjord BRÅVIKEN (an arm of the Baltic Sea), where the river Motala Ström has its outlet.
Norrköping has had city status since 1384, but had its real heyday later – specifically in the 1600s. This was due primarily to the enterprising, Walloon iron plant and industrial entrepreneur Louis De Geer (1587-1652) settled here. A statue of him stands in Old Square – and one of the city’s major cultural institutions are named after him: Louis De Geer Concert & Kongresshus (1994). Near this we find other so-called “industrial landscape” in which the premises of the former Holmen Paper Mill has been restored and are now making themselves useful as “Campus Norrköping” (a branch of the University of Linköping).
There are many large beautiful building in Norrköping, as in the Geers time period actually was Sweden’s second largest city. Some of these also has important cultural functions. This includes Norrköping Art Museum in Drottninggatan (the city’s main street) and the unique “Strykjärnet”, located into the Motala Ström, which houses the Museum of Labour.
Otherwise, the following attractions include: the exotic plant “Cactus Plant No” in the central Karl Johans park, Hällristningsmuseet in the recreation area Hellestad Lund (a little east of downtown) and the castle ruins Johannisborg (north of Motala Ström).
Norrköping Airport (Kungsängen flygplats) is located 3 miles east of downtown.
