Gothenburg is – with about 510,000 inhabitants (2008) – Sweden’s second largest city, located on the west coast, specifically in Västra Götaland. Gothenburg was granted city status in 1621, and is also an important port with ferry connections to Denmark, Germany, England and the Netherlands .The city lies on both sides of the Göta River, which flows into the Kattegat. Outside the city lies the beautiful archipelago with its many small islands.

Gothenburg has many sights and tourist attractions – including opera, concert halls, theaters, museums and art galleries. In addition, the city can attract with great shopping, great restaurants and a bustling nightlife.

Gothenburg is known for its large amusement park “Liseberg” and the popular science museum “Universeum”. Other popular sites are Trädgårdsforeningen – with the largest greenhouses, Rohsska Museum – a museum of fashion, design and crafts, Slottsskogen with mini-zoo and Gothenburg’s oldest suburb Haga – with its charming cobblestone streets, cozy cafes, antique shops and specialty shops. On Skansberget in Haga is also Skansen Kronan – a defense system from 1687 – which was in 2008 named the city’s most beautiful building.

Art buffs should visit the Gothenburg Art Museum, the world’s foremost museum of Nordic art, and also has in its exhibit works by Rembrandt, Picasso and Monet.

Otherwise, sightseeing boat Paddan mentioned, which takes tourists on a guided tour round the city’s canals and the Göta Älv.

Sweden’s second largest airport is Arlanda Airport, located 20 miles east of downtown.
