Gothenburg is – with about 510,000 inhabitants (2008) – Sweden’s second largest city, located on the west coast, specifically in Västra Götaland. Gothenburg was granted city status in 1621, and is also an important port with ferry connections to Denmark , Germany , England and the Netherlands .The city lies on both sides of the Göta River, which flows into the Kattegat.
