Stralsund is located in the northeastern corner of Germany – in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania – and is a port city on the Baltic Sea with approx.60,000 inhabitants (2008). Strelasund Strait separates the island of Rügen Stralsund, the city has a bridge connection with through the historic fortress island Dänholm.

Stralsund is often called “Gateway to Rügen” – and many combine a trip here with a visit to Sassnitz, which is a famous beach and spa resort in the northeast of Rügen (52 km from Stralsund). From here there are also passenger ferries to Bornholm, Trelleborg in Sweden, Klaipeda in Lithuania and St. Petersburg in Russia .

All of Stralsund’s old town center (with roots back to the Hanseatic period in 1200 – and 1300’s) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here is the entire 570-preserved medieval buildings – and these are the following the most famous: Nikolaikirche (1276), Lubeck (1298), Jakobikirche (1303), Stralsund Rathaus (town hall from the 1200s), Katharinenkloster (built ca. 1250 – home Today, a cultural history) and Johanniskloster (built 1254 – now home to Stralsund city archive). Mention must also The Swedish government palace around 1730.In the period 1648-1815 was in fact Stralsund and Rügen in Swedish possession as part of Swedish Pomerania region.
